5 Ways Coffee Makes You Live Longer

Coffee can easily be the world’s healthiest and most favorite beverage at the same time. Now that there’s so much evidence to back up its health benefits(including life longevity), you may want to increase your daily dose. Many recent studies now suggest that coffee drinkers do tend to have longer lives as compared to their non-coffee drinking peers. A research conducted on individuals with destructive lifestyle habits, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that people who had at least a single cup of joe daily reduced their chances of dying from a lifestyle-associated disease within a decade.

Another study conducted by the  US National Institute for Health showed a correlation between the amount of coffee consumption and the likelihood of death. The research concluded that “Those who consumed three or more cups of coffee per day had approximately a 10 percent lower risk of death.”

The University of Southampton also published a study where they claimed that individuals who consume 3 to 4 cups of coffee daily have a remarkably lower risk of premature deaths.

So what is in this magic life potion that extends your age? The answer is pretty simple because coffee does protect against many debilitating health problems such as cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. It has also shown to decrease the risk of depression, liver diseases, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. Coffee consumers are also known to have a lower risk of death by suicide.

Here’s how the magic happens!

Coffee is Loaded with Antioxidants

Coffee comes with a boatload of antioxidants, much greater in quantity than green tea or cocoa. Unprocessed coffee beans contain almost 1,000 antioxidants and several more are produced when these beans are roasted. After the grinding process, when coffee grounds are brewed in hot water those antioxidants are released in the water for you to consume.

While the vast majority drinks coffee for its caffeine alert-effect, they do benefit from a variety of antioxidants that come along with it, such as caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, and quinine protect your body from damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals that play a major role in forming cancerous tumors.

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t like to eat a lot of fruits and veggies, you’re not alone, because many studies show that the largest source of antioxidants in a Western diet is coffee rather than fruits and vegetables combined. This doesn’t mean that coffee has more antioxidants than fruits and veggies, but that coffee consumption is just more common enough to contribute to antioxidant intake.

Coffee Reduces the Risk of Diabetes

Diabetic numbers are rising, now affecting up to 300 million people worldwide and still increasing. Decreased sensitivity to insulin or reduced insulin production can elevate blood sugar to dangerous levels and damage vital organs.

A study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology showed that coffee drinkers have a reduced risk of developing Diabetes than non-coffee drinkers and people who drink occasionally.

Another study from the Archives of Internal Medicine found that individuals who consumed 6 or more cups of coffee every day lowered their risk of diabetes by 22%. Each cup reduces the risk of developing type II diabetes by 9% every day.

However, it is imperative that you drink coffee in moderation and not make it a replacement to a healthy diet and exercise.

Coffee is Anti-Aging

Inflammation is your body’s way to fight off harmful substances and remove toxins. Inflammation is also an important part of your immune system. As you age, this inflammatory response gets disrupted, making your body more susceptible to chronic conditions like arthritis, atherosclerosis, and infections.

A study published in the Journal of Nature Medicine showed that caffeine in tea and coffee can reduce age-related inflammation, which gives rise to many aging diseases.  The study found that the more level of caffeine an individual had in their blood, the less inflammation was observed. The researchers believed that caffeine not only blocks adenosine in the brain but also adenine and adenosine on immune cells which reduces their inflammatory response.

Other compounds in coffee called antioxidants also play a role in lowering inflammation. These compounds include polyphenols, cafestol, hydrocinnamic acids, melanoidins, lignan, trigonelline, and quinine.

Coffee Can Prevent Heart Disease

Coffee also has a protective effect on your heart. Coffee drinkers are less likely to develop heart diseases than non-coffee drinkers. Habitual coffee drinkers are at a lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular cause such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and congestive heart failure. Coffee consumers are also less likely to develop risk factors associated with heart diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and depression.

The U.S. Dietary Guidelines in the year 2015 also included a daily habit of coffee as protective against heart disease and diabetes type 2. Several types of research around the world have proved time and time again that your cup of joe can prevent the onset of heart disease.

A European study found that coffee drinkers who drank heavily had a decreased risk of dying prematurely by 7% to 12%. It was also found that these individuals had a reduced risk of developing digestive and heart-related problems. Another Korean study found that people who consumed 3 to 5 cup of coffee daily had reduced risk of showing early signs of heart problems.

Coffee Makes You Happy

Coffee can not only add years to your life but also increase your happiness. Drinking coffee increases dopamine release which is a rewarding hormone that makes you feel happy. Coffee can also significantly boost brain power which means it can improve your memory, focus and reaction time.

Coffee drinkers also have a reduced risk of depression, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.  A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health on 50,000 female participants showed that women who consumed 4 or more cups of coffee on a daily basis had a reduced risk of getting depressed than those who didn’t by 20%.

Coffee drinkers are also at a lower risk of dying by suicide. Many studies have shown that caffeine in coffee can boost your happiness and prevent suicide. Research found that people who drank 2 to 4 cups of caffeinated coffee had a 50% reduced risk of attempting suicide than non-coffee drinkers or people who consumed decaf.
