There are a few steps to getting your student visa and here’s how you can go about it.
Get Accepted By A SEVP Approved School
You need to apply for a Student and Exchange Visitor Program or SEVP approved institution because only these are the ones which can enroll students in the SEVIS and provide an accepted students with the necessary documents to apply for US student visa. Once you get accepted by an institution, the university will arrange for you to be sent a SEVIS-generated document to go ahead with the visa.
Pay The SEVIS Fee
At least three days prior to applying for your US visa, you need file a form and pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System or SEVIS fee. Depending on what kind of visa you are looking at, the fee ranges from $180 or $200, which can be paid via debit card, credit card, cheque, international money order or Western Union Quick Pay. This form is available on the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) SEVP website and once paid, do keep a copy of the receipt.
Complete The US Student Visa Application
Once you are done with your payment and received the SEVIS form, you can now apply for the US Student visa. You can contact your country’ American consulate or apply online. Usually most countries have their dedicated websites for application, or the US embassy’s website will have the necessary information. It is a good idea to apply in as soon as possible because the processing time can vary.
Pay The Visa Application Fee
After you fill up your application, you are required to pay a non-refundable and non-transferable Machine Readable Visa or MRV Fee for the visa processing to proceed. Usually this fee can be paid physically at a bank, over phone or online. Any which way you get your payment done, ensure that you get your confirmation number and/or receipt, which will be required during your visa interview.
Schedule And Attend Visa Interview.
The final step towards getting your visa is the interview. You need to schedule an appointment for your visa, which can be done either online or over telephone. For the interview you will need to appear in person at the nearest US consulate or embassy. The wait time can vary so set up the interview with ample time in hand. Carry all your necessary documents and recent photographs ready when you appear for the interview.
When you fly to the US, keep all paperwork at hand as you still need to be approved by the Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection to be able to enter the country.
