Robert Pattinson’s Batman will remain outside of James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU), and some fans aren’t taking the news well. Despite previous confirmations, many had still hoped Pattinson would be integrated into the broader franchise. Now, Gunn’s latest statement has put that speculation to rest.
The Official Word: Pattinson’s Batman Stays in “Elseworlds”
In a recent interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, James Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran made it clear: Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not be part of the new DCU. The question came up regarding The Brave and the Bold, a future film that will introduce a fresh take on the Caped Crusader.
“It’s certainly not the plan. Like, it’s certainly not the plan,” Gunn stated firmly.
Safran echoed the sentiment, adding, “No, yeah, and we love him, but you know, we have to introduce a Batman into the DCU. You know, it’s imperative and so, that’s the plan with Brave and the Bold.”
This should not have come as a shock. Gunn has been consistent about his vision since taking over DC Studios. He previously confirmed that Pattinson’s portrayal of the Dark Knight would exist separately under the “DC Elseworlds” banner. That means The Batman films, directed by Matt Reeves, will continue independently, while the DCU will have its own version of Bruce Wayne.
Fans React: “Not a Fan of Two Batman Leads”
Despite the clarity, many fans are still voicing their frustration online. The idea of having two different live-action Batmen running simultaneously doesn’t sit well with everyone.

“Not a fan of having two different Batman leads,” wrote user @TrendyDude3 on Twitter. “My hope was that they would incorporate Pattinson in a limited role in the DCU. More of a supporting role. Rather have that than a different actor in a Brave and the Bold standalone film.”
-
“The issue James Gunn has now, though, is not only does he need to find the right man to cast in his DCU, but he has to make sure the performance and the story deliver too,” added @Jw95Kieran. “Now, his DCU has gotten off to a great start, but he absolutely has to maintain this moving forward.”
It’s clear that many fans had been holding onto hope, even though the writing had been on the wall for quite some time.
A Risky Move or a Necessary One?
The decision to keep Pattinson’s Batman separate is a calculated one. Gunn and Safran are building the DCU from the ground up, starting with Superman (set to release in 2025). Bringing in an already-established Batman could have complicated things.
Still, the approach carries risks. The introduction of a brand-new Batman, so soon after Pattinson’s acclaimed performance, could create unnecessary comparisons. Fans may struggle to accept yet another Bruce Wayne, especially when Pattinson is still active in the role.
At the same time, separating the two characters allows Reeves’ vision to remain untouched. His Batman films have a grounded, detective-driven approach that may not fit the shared universe style Gunn is crafting.
What’s Next for Batman in the DCU?
So, what should fans expect from The Brave and the Bold? Gunn has made it clear that this version of Batman will be different—not just another reboot, but something distinct from previous iterations.
Here’s what we know so far:
- The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman, distinct from Pattinson’s.
- The film will feature Damian Wayne as Robin, marking the first time Bruce’s biological son is included in a live-action movie.
- The story will draw inspiration from Grant Morrison’s comic run, known for its darker, more intense take on the father-son dynamic.
- The casting process has not been announced, but speculation is already rampant.
A big question remains: Who will take on the role of this new Bruce Wayne? With Pattinson continuing his journey in Reeves’ films and Ben Affleck officially retired from the role, DC Studios has a major casting challenge ahead.
A Fanbase Divided
The reaction to Gunn’s decision highlights an ongoing issue in fandom—expectations versus reality. Many had convinced themselves that Pattinson could transition into the DCU, despite clear statements to the contrary.
Now, some are frustrated. Others are open to the idea of a fresh start.
One thing is certain: Gunn has made his choice, and he’s sticking to it. The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman, whether fans are ready for it or not.
