Marvel fans, get ready. The Scarlet Witch is making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) this year. But there’s a catch—no one seems to know exactly how or why, not even Elizabeth Olsen herself.
Marvel Zombies Brings Wanda Back—But in What Form?
Set to premiere on Disney+ on October 3, Marvel Zombies will bring Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, back into the MCU in a big way. The animated miniseries appears to be a spin-off of the popular zombie episode from What If…? and will include some heavy-hitters:
- Shang-Chi
- Yelena Belova
- Kate Bishop
- Kamala Khan
- Red Guardian
All of these characters will be voiced by the same A-list actors who play them in the live-action MCU. That includes Olsen, who last appeared as Wanda in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
But there’s something strange about her return.
Olsen Says She Can’t Remember What She Did
When Entertainment Tonight asked Elizabeth Olsen about Marvel Zombies, her response raised more questions than answers.
“I feel like I did that a few years ago, but… no, but I don’t remember any of these things,” Olsen admitted. “I don’t know when they release them because the animation takes a long time.”
This could be a classic Marvel secrecy move—actors are notorious for playing coy to avoid spoilers. But Olsen’s reaction didn’t seem scripted. It felt genuinely uncertain. If she recorded her lines years ago, Marvel must have been planning this return for quite some time.
Or, maybe, her character’s role isn’t as straightforward as it seems.
Where Else Could Scarlet Witch Appear?
Here’s where things get tricky. While Marvel Zombies is confirmed, another major MCU project is coming up: Thunderbolts.
The film, which focuses on a group of antiheroes and morally gray characters, is next in line for the MCU. But no one has any idea how Scarlet Witch might fit into it—if she’s even involved at all.
There’s been speculation that Wanda could make a surprise appearance in Thunderbolts, given her past history with morally ambiguous choices. But nothing has been confirmed, and Olsen herself has made no mention of it.
What’s the Real Plan for Wanda?
Marvel is playing its cards close to the chest. Wanda Maximoff’s return could be as simple as a cameo in Marvel Zombies, or it could be something much bigger.
A few possibilities:
- Zombie Wanda Returns: We already saw a zombified Scarlet Witch in What If…?, so this could be an extension of that storyline.
- A Multiverse Variant: Marvel has been diving deep into the multiverse lately, so maybe this isn’t the same Wanda we last saw in Multiverse of Madness.
- A Prelude to Something Bigger: If Marvel is planting seeds for a larger Scarlet Witch storyline, this could be just the beginning.
With Olsen’s vague comments and Marvel’s history of misdirection, fans will just have to wait until October to see what’s really going on.
