Capcom Bets Big on Manga With ‘Street Fighter: Luke Rising’ Launching June 29

Capcom is doubling down on its golden boy Luke with a brand-new manga titled Street Fighter: Luke Rising, and it’s hitting shelves sooner than you think. Launching June 29, 2025, in the pages of CoroCoro Comic, this new series puts Luke front and center — again — but this time, in ink and panels.

It’s not just any random release either. The manga, illustrated by Yoshio Mokomokomaru Masao, is part of a full-blown collaboration between Capcom and CoroCoro to celebrate the second anniversary of Street Fighter 6. And yes, it looks as over-the-top and fun as you’d expect.

A Manga Milestone for the Franchise

Capcom’s been in the comic space before. But this? This one feels different.

Instead of rehashing Ryu’s origin story for the umpteenth time, Street Fighter: Luke Rising is clearly betting on the newer generation. Luke, who first showed up as DLC for Street Fighter V, has fast become the face of SF6. His high-energy, brash style — think Guile’s hair meets TikTok influencer vibes — makes him a good fit for a shonen-targeted comic.

And that’s exactly what CoroCoro Comic delivers. Aimed at younger readers in Japan, it’s known for mixing mainstream game IPs with zany storytelling and eye-popping art. In short, the perfect arena for Luke to punch his way into manga fame.

Just one glance at the announcement tweet from CoroCoro’s official X account tells you everything. The art shows Luke mid-pose with that familiar smirk, Ryu standing coolly behind him, and a few other characters squeezed into tiny background panels. Classic chaotic comic energy.

Who’s Drawing This? Meet Yoshio Mokomokomaru Masao

If the name Yoshio Mokomokomaru Masao doesn’t ring a bell, don’t sweat it — but it probably should.

He’s no stranger to gaming manga. His work on Gaming Ojou-sama had a decent following, especially among fans of high-octane, humor-packed storytelling. He’s also done multiple one-shots for Shonen Jump, a few of which exploded on Japanese Twitter thanks to their over-the-top expressions and meme-worthy panels.

This time around, Mokomokomaru has the chance to stretch out in a serialized format with a massive IP backing him. Big difference. Fans are expecting bold lines, exaggerated reactions, wild action, and, hopefully, some heartfelt storytelling hidden under all the punches.

That style feels just right for Luke, honestly.

Capcom’s Manga Push Tied to SF6’s Milestone

So why now? Why Luke? Why CoroCoro?

It all comes down to timing. Capcom dropped Street Fighter 6 in early June 2023 across PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The arcade version followed in December. That means June 2025 marks two years since launch — and Capcom clearly wants to make it loud.

A manga is a clever move. It does three things at once:

  • Celebrates the two-year anniversary in a fan-friendly way

  • Puts fresh eyes on Luke as the series’ new centerpiece

  • Grows interest among younger audiences, especially in Japan

They’re not stopping there. On June 5, just a few weeks before the manga hits, Capcom is dropping Street Fighter 6 on the Nintendo Switch 2. Yeah — a whole new audience is about to enter the ring.

Timing isn’t just right. It’s perfect.

Street Fighter and Manga: A Look at the Past

This isn’t Capcom’s first rodeo with manga adaptations, but it might be one of its boldest.

Here’s a quick look at how their past titles have fared:

Manga Title Lead Character(s) Publication Year Publisher
Street Fighter II: Ryu Ryu 1993 Tokuma Shoten
Street Fighter Alpha Various 1996 VIZ Media
Sakura Ganbaru! Sakura 1996 Shonen Jump
Street Fighter: Back to SF6 Ensemble Cast 2023 Manga One
Street Fighter: Luke Rising Luke 2025 CoroCoro Comic
As you can see, most of the older adaptations focused on long-time favorites like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Sakura. Capcom pivoting to Luke isn’t just notable — it’s a bit of a gamble. But given Luke’s role in SF6, it’s probably a safe one.

The Bigger Picture: Luke’s Star Keeps Rising

Luke wasn’t always beloved by the Street Fighter fanbase.

When he first landed in Street Fighter V as a DLC character, reactions were mixed. Some loved his high-pressure style. Others thought he lacked depth. But Capcom pushed through. Fast-forward to Street Fighter 6, and Luke’s the guy on the box.

Now he’s the guy in the manga.

This move speaks volumes about Capcom’s vision for the franchise going forward. Instead of relying solely on nostalgia, they’re investing in newer faces. If Luke Rising lands with readers — especially kids — it could lock him in as the true heir to Ryu’s legacy.

We’ll see how it pans out, but the signs are good.

All eyes are on June 29.
