GoPro just made its biggest move in years. The MISSION 1 Series is now open for pre-order, and it is not another action cam refresh. This is a full compact cinema camera lineup targeting filmmakers and creators who long outgrew what a HERO could do. Units ship on May 28, and the buzz around this launch is real.
What GoPro Is Actually Launching
The MISSION 1 Series are the world’s smallest, lightest, and most rugged 8K and 4K Open Gate cinema cameras. That is a bold claim, but the hardware behind it is hard to argue with.
Featuring a new 50MP 1″ sensor and GoPro’s new, ultra-efficient GP3 processor, the MISSION 1 Series cameras deliver category-leading resolutions, frame rates, runtimes, and thermal performance for mission-critical reliability in even the most demanding environments.
The MISSION 1 Series is a new line of compact cinematic cameras designed to go beyond traditional action cameras like the GoPro HERO Black line. They feature a larger, cutting-edge 1″ sensor, incredible low-light performance, 8K30 and 4K120 Open Gate video capture, and category-leading resolutions and frame rates, battery life and thermal performance for extreme use cases. They are the world’s smallest, lightest and most rugged professional-grade cinematic cameras, made for filmmakers, creators and aspiring enthusiasts.
Three models are available to order right now. MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, and MISSION 1 will be available for preorder beginning May 21st, with global on-shelf availability starting May 28th. MISSION 1 PRO ILS, MISSION 1 PRO Creator Edition, and MISSION 1 PRO Ultimate Creator Edition will be available beginning Q3 2026.

The Tech Inside These Cameras
The new 50MP 1″ sensor features a larger surface area and larger native 1.6µm pixels and massive 3.2µm fused pixels, capturing more light for professional low-light performance, up to 14 stops of dynamic range at the sensor, and professional-grade image quality. The new GP3 processor features an ultra-power-efficient 5nm design, enabling category-leading battery runtimes and thermal performance along with best-in-class resolutions, frame rates, and image quality.
An AI Neural Processor Unit (NPU) enables next-generation video pixel processing and stunning low-light image performance. This is not marketing fluff. The 5nm chip design directly addresses the thermal throttling issue that plagued earlier GoPro models during long 4K and 8K recording sessions.
Here is how the two launch models compare side by side:
| Feature | MISSION 1 | MISSION 1 PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor | 50MP 1″ (same) | 50MP 1″ (same) |
| Processor | GP3 (same) | GP3 (same) |
| Max 16:9 Video | 8K30, 4K120, 1080p240 | 8K60, 4K240, 1080p960 |
| Open Gate | 4K120 | 8K30, 4K120 |

GoPro claims the GP3 processor delivers improvements in battery life and thermal performance over previous generations, with the new Enduro 2 battery rated for 5+ hours at 1080p30 or 3+ hours at 4K30. For extended shoots, that is a meaningful number.
GoPro has added some decent audio recording options, including the ability to capture 32-bit float, and you can also use Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity to pair various wireless devices, including GoPro’s new Wireless Mic.
How It Stacks Up Against DJI and the Competition
GoPro says its sensor is 25.4% larger than the sensor in the DJI Osmo Action 6 and 43.8% larger than the one in the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. Those are significant gaps on paper.
At 8K resolution, GoPro says its sensor gathers 77% more light per pixel than the competition. The GP3 processor powers the resolution and frame rates, but also handles thermal management, which matters enormously in compact cameras that tend to throttle or shut down during extended 8K recording. GoPro says GP3 delivers better thermal performance than any previous chip in the line.
Users have been asking for cameras like this from GoPro for more than a decade, and it’s good to see that they have now actually materialized. With increased competition in the action camera market with options from DJI and Insta360, GoPro needed to think outside of the box.
GoPro is no longer just chasing DJI and Insta360. It is going after bigger targets. GoPro’s VP of Global Marketing stated that MISSION1 “has performance sufficient not only as an action cam but also as a cinema cam, making it a product capable of changing the landscape of the global market.” He added, “Our competitors are not only existing action camera companies but also makers of professional cinema cameras such as Canon and RED Digital Cinema.”
The Mission 1 Pro’s pricing puts it in competition with serious interchangeable-lens video cameras, including the Canon EOS R50V and Nikon Z30, both of which GoPro is clearly aiming at with this launch.
Accessories, Pricing, and What You Should Know Before Ordering
Additional accessories available for pre-order include the Enduro 2 Battery (2150 mAh, also compatible with HERO13 Black) at $34.99, a Dual Battery Charger for Enduro 2 (charges two batteries from 0 to 80% in 48 minutes) at $79.99, M-Series ND Filter 4-Pack (ND8, ND16, ND32, ND64, with auto-detect) at $99.99, and a Protective Housing (waterproof to 60m / 196ft) at $59.99.
The MISSION 1 PRO and MISSION 1 are waterproof up to 66ft (20m) depth without the need of a housing. That makes them genuinely dive-ready out of the box.
The Grip Edition deserves a special mention. The MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition is the flagship camera bundled with an innovative versatile grip that transforms the camera into an even more rugged, ultra-capable point-and-shoot camera designed for run-and-gun style capture. The grip functions as a 2-in-1 solution as a lightweight, ergonomic grip for easy one-handed on-the-move shots, or as a rugged, mountable metal cage for added protection with the option to mount vertically. Added features include cold shoe mounts, 1/4-20 and magnetic latch mounting. That bundle costs $779.99 at retail, or $679.99 for GoPro subscribers.
Here is a quick breakdown of what each model costs:
- MISSION 1: $599.99 MSRP / $499.99 for GoPro subscribers
- MISSION 1 PRO: $699.99 MSRP / $599.99 for GoPro subscribers
- MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition: $779.99 MSRP / $679.99 for GoPro subscribers
GoPro is currently offering a free Point-and-Shoot Grip bundled with any MISSION 1 or MISSION 1 PRO pre-order while supplies last. That is a $99.99 freebie that makes pre-ordering the smarter financial move right now.
And for those waiting on the most exciting model in the lineup: the rather anticipated Mission 1 Pro ILS, which adds a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens mount, is not part of this pre-order wave and is expected in Q3 2026. The MISSION 1 PRO ILS also supports in-camera HyperSmooth video stabilization with any rectilinear, prime focal length lens. This versatility, combined with its video stabilization, weatherproof design and trademark GoPro durability, makes it the world’s smallest, most rugged and versatile high-speed cinema camera at a fraction of the cost of comparable cameras.
For years, GoPro fans asked the company to build a camera serious enough to be a primary shooter, not just a backup that clips to a helmet. With the MISSION 1 Series, GoPro has finally answered that call with a hardware platform that punches well above its size and price class. Whether real-world footage holds up to the spec sheet is something reviewers will settle within days of the May 28 shipping date. But what is clear right now is that GoPro has entered a new league, and the compact cinema camera space just got a lot more interesting. Drop your thoughts in the comments below. Are you planning to pre-order the MISSION 1 or waiting for the ILS version later this year?
